Freeborn Mower Electric Cooperative invests heavily in its load management programs.
Load management is a critical part of the electrical utility business. By controlling peak loads, we are able to keep electric bills lower for our members. Actual load control comes from our wholesale power supplier, Dairyland Power Cooperative (DPC).
The load management programs involve the ability to turn on and off specified interruptible loads by use of a radio receiver signal. These typically include electric water heaters, electric heat options, heat pumps, and air conditioners.
The decision to activate the load management system is very dependent on the weather situation. In most cases, control does not happen every day, but is most likely to occur during periods of severe cold or extreme heat. They may also occur if electric generating capacity should happen to be reduced for such reasons as a power plant being off-line for maintenance.
The more effective we are in holding down peak levels of electrical demand, the greater control we have over the demand charges we pay to DPC. Our success depends on you and your patterns of electric use - as this is what determines the severity of our cooperative's peak demand.
